Peter Whelan

Peter Whelan was born in Dublin in 1978. Having graduated from Trinity College Dublin, Peter travelled to Basel to complete his studies with Sergio Azzolini.

Peter was the recipient of several government scholarships and awards and has appeared as principal bassoon with many prominent British and European Orchestras including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Zurich Opera.

Peter currently holds the position of principal bassoon with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and appears regularly as guest principal bassoon with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. His recent performances of Vivaldi bassoon concerti with the Irish Baroque Orchestra (directed by Monica Huggett and Lucy van Dael) have won him critical acclaim.
