The Hackney Proms

Kelen Chadwick: Hackney Empire Sings Battuta: Mendelssohn Family

Hackney Proms was formed as a not-for-profit group in 2004 to introduce more high-quality orchestral music to the cultural life of Hackney, East London. Since that date, Hackney Proms have promoted a number of very successful concerts in the Hackney Empire Theatre. The concerts are relaxed and informal Sunday morning performances, with coffee, croissants, and drinks available at the bar in the spacious promenade area and comfortable seating in the Empire’s superbly restored auditorium. Children are welcome.

The first few series of Hackney Proms featured Battuta, London's exciting new period-instrument ensemble. A collection of fresh and dynamic young musicians with international reputations under the direction of Hackney-born violinist George Crawford, their concerts focus on the spirit of the music, with energy, humour and a strong interaction with the audience.

We have put up some audio samples, a selection of audience comments and some photos from the first series of concerts in 2005.

Hackney Proms are presenting two concerts in the Hackney Empire theatre's Spice Festival.

On 5th July, the wonderful Helen Chadwick Group perform Hackney Empire Sings, a concert to celebrate the life of the Hackney GP Dr. Gaby Tobias, and to launch a new trust fund in her name: Helping Hackney Health.

On 14th July, Battuta return for a fascinating programme inspired by life in the 1820s home of Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn: No. 3, Leipziger Straße.

On this website you will find further details about The Hackney Proms and the ensemble Battuta.
